Short Bio

Sophie Min is a Korean-Australian pianist, composer and improvising artist whose work shows a distinctive personal aesthetic and one of the most outstanding young jazz musicians in Australia. She has featured as one of the emerging talents of Australia on ABC Jazz in 2021.

She has issued 5 albums, these recordings investigate a wide range of practices and techniques in the jazz improvisational form showing strong interactions between each instrument and feature her own unique colours and contemporary jazz approaches with varied small ensembles.

Her composition has nominated to the Queensland Music Awards for 3 years in a row for her jazz orchestra album, 'Bellwether', 'Thanks for the Hands', Min/Sherlock (2019) and 'Starlight', Nimble (2018). Other awards include the 1st place of the International Composers Festival: Compfest (2018), Banff International Workshop Scholarship Fund (2018), 7 Virtual Jazz Club: Global Contest for jazz musician, Semifinalist (2017), QCGU Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Award in composition and the Centrum Jazz Port Townsend Scholarship (USA) and the GCGU Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Award (2015).

The most representative highlights of her music were Melbourne International Women Jazz Festival, Brisbane International Jazz Festival, ABC Jazz, Jazzlab, Paris Cats, JMI, QPAC, Brisbane Jazz Club and Brisbane City Council Projects. She attended the Banff International Jazz Program, toured with the 2015 JM Jazz World Orchestra and she has composed music for Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra, Con Artists Orchestra and many more.

She has received undergraduate and master's degree in jazz piano performance at the Queensland Conservatorium with Academic Excellence Award. 


Sophie teaches at Queensland Conservatorium and her own Music Studio.
